School has begun! This is an opportune time to encourage young people to go to the library (virtually), choose a good book, and explore new worlds. Most libraries provide eBooks, audiobooks, and some have implemented curbside pick-up. Also, in September, public libraries throughout the US, promote “Library Card Sign-up Month.” Go online to your county public library and apply for a card today.
Sit down and enjoy a great read aloud with your scholar(s). Older readers can search and find a book they will enjoy on their own. With a library account, books are as close as your smartphone, tablet, or laptop device.
Share reading experiences with children and ask them to read their favorite books to you. Question them about the book. Start a conversation about your child’s favorite author/illustrator. And, don’t forget to share your favorite author/illustrator, including what it is you like about them. Surprisingly, this can be a fun time for both you and your children.
Happy Labor Day!
